The word hulili is defined as “ladder, bridge, as to scale a cliff or cross a gully” (Hawaiian Dictionary, Pukui & Elbert, 1986, p. 89). Why after thirty years, should Beckwith’s Hawaiian Mythology be reprinted? Why, for the last twenty-five years, have scholars and amateurs alike sought for either new or used copies of this book which has become a rarity? To begin with, it was the first, and is still the only, scholarly work which charts a pathway through the hundreds of books and articles, many of them obscure and scarce, and through the little-known manuscripts that record the orally transmitted myths, legends, traditions, folktales, and romances of the Hawaiian people. Within the last decade, the U.S. Census Bureau has continued to take great strides to ensure adequate representation of Native Hawaiian issues among their various data products. For the first time in history, individuals could select more than one race for Census 2000. This meant more accurate counts for Native Hawaiians, who could now be separated from the category, “Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander” (NHOPI) by being counted as Native Hawaiian alone or in combination with other races. According to the U.S. Census 2000 data, there are approximately 401,162 Native Hawaiians in Hawaii and on the continent. In the State of Hawaii alone, there are over 239,655 Native Hawaiians, representing 60% of the total population of Native Hawaiians in the United States. This volume, compiled at the request of Mr. Jeffrey Merz, of Oceanit, on behalf of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of State Parks (DLNR-DSP), includes excerpts from nine oral history and consultation interviews. Several of the kamaaina who graciously agreed to share their histories and recollections of the Kaluanui and Kaliuwaa vicinity, are descended from families who have resided on the land for generations—some being descended from traditional residents who claimed residency rights in the Mahele Aina of 1848. Other interviewees have lived in the region and traveled in Kaluanui and Kaliuwaa since the 1940s. The oral history interviews reported herein, provide present and future generations with an opportunity to experience some of the history of the lands and families in the Kaluanui vicinity.
