INTRODUCTION The extraordinary development of industry in the past one hundred and fifty years has led to a parallel development of the basic sciences of engineering and of their application to practical problems. The engineering profession, which previously worked according to inherited rules, has found itself confronted with problems to which such rules could not be applied, and has had to reason out the solutions with the help of science. The steadily growing multiplicity and diversity of problems imply application of an increasing number of sciences, beginning with mathematics and mechanics and adding successively various branches of physics, chemistry, biology, and other sciences. The knowledge required both of the basic sciences and of their technical application has, of necessity, led to the division of engineering into several branches and to specialization.
