ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ASPECTS OF METROPOLITAN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT Report of a WHO Expert Committee The WHO Expert Committee on Environmental Health Aspects of Metropolitan Planning and Development met in Geneva from 23 to 29 June 1964. Dr P. Dorolle, Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organization, opening the meeting, \\-elcorned the participants and representatives of the United Nations and of two non-governmental organizations. In a brief statement he defined the purposes for which the meeting was called, referring to the historical development of international collaboration in the fields of health and housing and city and regional planning. Dr Dorolle mentioned the en\-ironmental health problems which confronted cities in many developed countries today, and stated that it was clearly necessary for public health authorities in developing countries to avoid the mistakes made in the past in de\-eloped countries and be prepared to meet their responsibilities in this respect. He stressed WHO's interest in studying these problems and referred to previous reports of the WHO Expert Committee on Public Health Administration and the WHO Expert Committee on the Public Health Aspects of Housing,' both of which had reviewed urban health questions closely related to the subject before this group. He cited WHO's participation in a concerted international programme in housing, building, and plannins being carried out by the United Nations and the specialized agencies to assist lMember States in these matters.
