Keeping a “Daily Mood Barometer” or “DMB” can be exceptionally useful for anyone who suffers from mental illness or for anyone who takes medications, anyone trying to lose weight, or anyone who simply wants to be more emotionally aware about their self. The daily practice of stating how you feel helps people from all walks of life and ages to become more emotionally aware of their self and also able to tell others who support them such as parents, friends, social workers, doctors, and family members, in a broader vocabulary of how they are feeling in place of saying “I don’t feel good” or “I don’t know how I feel”. Developing an emotional vocabulary through emotional awareness is something that benefits everyone regardless of age or situation. The sooner you start the sooner you will begin to reap the benefits of the “DMB”. Some of the benefits of doing this on a daily basis are being able to identify areas that need attention before the point of hospitalization, having a visual number to be able to tell if you are doing better or worse than the day before, and you will have a recorded document of your situation to show to those who support you such as your family or doctors.
