Kodagu province, which was a 'C' State earlier to reorganisation, is a beautiful green country spread on the laps of western ghats of the Southern Part of India. It stretches over 5600 sq.km with Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet as the three Revenue Taluks. This province, now a district, has its own people, culture and heritage. The history of Kodagu is traceable from second century A.D onwards from the edicts left behind by various kings and kingdoms who ruled here...

Tracing this part of the history in Kodagu regarding the Judicial system, we find that the first munsiffs courts were established at Mercara and Virajpet around the year 1885 and in the process of evolution of this system, many a men of letters and competence have served the Bench and the Bar in Courts here.
