This study examines the links between science, philosophy, and military theory. The author uses two case studies to demonstrate the links between these disciplines. He presents an overview on the rise of Newtonian science, and he examines how the key frameworks and concepts of that science became interwoven into Western civilization to affect its philosophy with an emphasis on its interpretation by the German Romanticist philosopher Immanuel Kant. He then shows how Newtonian science and Kant’s philosophy affected the military theory of Carl von Clausewitz. His second case study concerns the theory and philosophy of evolution developed by British philosopher Herbert Spencer and its influence on the military theory of J. F. C. Fuller. The author compares these two case studies to find commonalities between them that suggest a mechanism which explains how and why scientific theory and their philosophical interpretations eventually influence military theory. This bibliography includes all known titles published in the Hawaiian language anywhere in the world between 1822 and the end of the century. The only items not listed are one-page broadsides, government documents, serials, sheet music, and programs for events such as concerts, royal functions, and the like. The work was begun in 1938 by Bernice Judd of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society Library at the suggestion of Dr. Clarence Brigham, director of the American Antiquarian Society. The original plan was simply to prepare a revision of Howard Ballou's 1908 bibliography. As the work progressed, however, it became evident that a mere revision was not practical, and a completely new bibliography was begun. Holdings recorded at that time were limited to those in libraries in Hawaii. When I undertook completion of the project in 1963, I decided to include additional information on each item and to recheck the local holdings, because most collections had grown considerably since 1938. The first chapter in the history of Hawaiian printing becomes primarily a resumé of the linguistic efforts of the early missionaries to the Sandwich Islands. To a researcher perhaps the most remarkable feature of the story is that the missionaries began their printing activities even before they had settled on a standard alphabet and orthography for the hitherto unwritten Hawaiian language. My grandmother used to tell me stories of the very small community I grew up in. My memory isn't as good as it shouold be so I wrote it all down. When I wanted to find our more about my home town, there was nothing written. so I set out to see if what she told me was true. The 50 year investigation (part time of course) and interviews with residents was intriguing. My family loves to tell stories. The stories I heard growing up brought to life several generations of residents of the community of Rapidan going all the way back to my great grandfather’s time. There were tales of the Civil War, the railroad, milling, flooding of the Rapidan River at twenty year intervals, and other Rapidan themes. In organizing this diversity of information, I have primarily attempted to give a history of the “community” of Rapidan, Virginia over time. I’ve also included information about another community by the same name, Rapidan, in Minnesota and stories told me by the crew of the USS Rapidan, a Navy oiler that served in World War II.
