The First Consultation with Leading Medical Practitioners was organized by WHO in Geneva on 23-24 August 1989. Participants in that meeting considered that a close relationship between WHO and the medical profession was important in order to achieve health goals, and a consultation was an appropriate means to improve communication between rhe two. It was also agreed that such consultations should continue, but with a focus on specific topics on each occasion. Subsequently it was decided that the Second Consultation should concentrate on the subiect of Continuing Medical Education (CME), and its role in Quality Assurance.
