INTRODUCTION In recent years, concern about the health effects of land, water and air pollution, and environmental, occupational and chemical hazards, has increased considerably. Meanwhile, environmental problems relating to water supply and sanitation, solid waste disposal, safe housing and food, have remained unresolved in many parts of the world. The need of environmental and public health agencies, particularly in developing countries, for access to appropriate scientific and technical information is now more urgent than ever. In particular, the intersectoral nature of many of these issues is making it increasingly difficult to keep up to date concerning environmental health hazards. To assist countries in addressing their environmental health problems, the World Health Organization initiated the Global Environmental Networks Project to strengthen education, training and research in this field. The first two networks to be set up were the Global Envlronrnental Epldernlology Network (GEENET), and the Global Envlronmental Technology Network (GETNET). Their memberships consist primarily of environmental health professionals.
