1 THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE By any standards, Ethiopia, occupying the major part of the land mass known as the 'Horn of Africa', is a large country. It stretches 1,640 kilometres from north to south and 1,670 kilometres from east to west. Although its surface area of 1,225,000 square kilometres makes it geographically the tenth largest country in Africa, its population of 30 million makes it the third most populous. In the north, there is a 900 kilometre coastline on the Red Sea, where two towns, Mitsiwa and Aseb are assisted by neighbouring Djibouti in providing port facilities for the country. Apart from this stretch of coast, Ethiopia is landlocked by Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Somalia to the south-east and Djibouti to the north-east (Figure 1.0).
