Excerpt: 14. The WSS site, 13 acres in size, is located approximately one mile east of the town of Anaconda in a gulch west of the smelter stack. The ROD estimated the volume of slag in this area to be 56,000 cubic yards. However, based on more recent topographic data, the estimate is closer to 360,000 cubic yards (Draft Waste Technical Memorandum, ARCO, 2000). Slag within the WSS was air cooled as part of the Anaconda Reduction Works smelter operation, rather than water quenched, resulting in particles of varied size distribution. It is anticipated that the boundary of the Smelter Hill Waste Management Area will be expanded to include the WSS.
