The National Center for Health Statistics-Centers for Dsease Control and Prevenuon (NCHS-CDC) has a key role m nutntton momtormg through conductmg national surveys of the nutrmonal and health status of the U.S. population. As part of the federal government's Ten-Year Comprehensive Plan for the Nattonal Nutrmon Momtormg and Related Research Program, NCHS-CDC also has lead responsbdty to develop a core set of standardized nutritional status indicators and appropriate mterpretwe criteria for the general populatRon and subgroups of the population The assessment and interpretation of height and weight are critical components of ths core nutritional status package The third National Health and Nutrmon Exammauon Survey (NHANES III) was specifically designed to include and oversample mfants and chddren ages 2 months - 5 years m order to rewse the NCHS Growth Charts.
