1. Opening 1.1 Opening Remarks A workshop on adolescent reproductive health was held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 7-12 October 1985 with participants from 10 African countrles. Professor N.O. Bwibo, Principal of the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi opened the meeting. In his speech, welcoming the participants to Kenya, Professor Bwibo noted that there were two programmes based at the University of Nairobi that have relevance to the workshop. Within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology there exists a research and training programme on reproductive health. In addition, there is a Population Studies and Research Institute of University of Nairobi which is carrying out research in reproduction and fertility in various provinces in the country. He wished the participants a happy stay in Nairobi and expressed his hope that the workshop would provoke stimulating discussion leading to the formulation of useful and practical suggestions to their Governments.
