PREFACE Early awareness and rapid communication of findings pertaining to workers' health and safety problems are essential for the early detection and control of occupational hazards. The Workers Health Programme of the World Health Organization is making every effort to be responsive to this need. Reports of potential health risks connected with the use of visual display terminals are of major concern to the millions of workers who use them as a part of their daily work activities. This technology is proliferating very rapidly, not only in industrialized countries, but in developing countries as well. In the wake of this expanding use of visual display terminals and the expressed concern about adverse health effects among visual display terminal operators, the World Health Organization asked Dr Ulf OV. Bergqvist and Professor Bengt Knave, of the National Board of Occupational Health and Safety in Sweden, to prepare a review of information bearing on this problem and to evaluate it critically. This document was circulated to the WHO Collaborating Centres for Occupational Health for review and comment prior to a meeting of a Working Group on Occupational Health Aspects in the Use of Visual Display Terminals that was held in Geneva on 2-6 December 1985.' The manuscript was finalized after this meeting and is published in the hope that it will facilitate the transfer of technical information not otherwise readily , available to those responsible for improving workers' health.
