1. TNTRODUCTION Cystic fibrosis (CF) i s more widespread than is generally recognized, either in the medical profession or by the general public. There are still many countries throughout the world where it Is often, perhaps usually, misdiagnosed. Four previous joint meetings between WHO and ICF(M)A have been held; in Vienna (1983)l, Nicosia (1985)~. Oslo (19~7)~ and Sydney ( 1 9 8 ~ ) ~A.t the Nicosla meeting, it was agreed that calculation of the incidence of CF in large parts of the world, such as the Middle East and Latin America was a high priority. At the most recent meeting in Sydney, it was agreed that although ideillly a method for heterozygoce detection would be the most appropriate for determining che crue incidence of CF in countries with serious under-diagnosis, the time-scale before ' I such a method is available is still uncertain. Limited neonatal screening programmes were justified in the interim, both as a means of increasing medical and population awareness of CF and also as a means of case identificationb.
