INTRODUCTION From the public health point of view, the best way to prevent TB is to provide effective treatment to the infectious TB cases. This interrupts the chain of transmission. Good treatment programmes are the best prevention programmes. HIV-infected individuals are particularly susceptible to infection with M. tuberculosis and the development of TB. What are the ways of protecting people from exposure to TB in health care settings? What is the role of BCG? What is the role of preventive treatment? Can we do anything about those HIV-infected individuals who are already infected with M. tuberculosis and have a high risk of developing active TB? This chapter addresses these questions.
