1.INTRODUCTION The Reiter treponeme has been used more or less continuously since the late 1920s in experimental and research work and as an antigen for serological tests for syphilis. Some groups of workers have maintained that this organism was originally a virulent treponeme and could cause syphilis, and others have maintained that the Reiter treponeme has always been a saprophytic organism. The available literature on the Reiter treponeme has been reviewed and compiled' in the present work to provide a source of information and references pertaining to its background, morphology, growth, use in serological tests for syphilis, and relation to other treponemes.
