Introduction Guinea-Bissau, on the West African coast, has an area of 36,125 km> and a population that was estimated in 1990 at 998,963. A former Portuguese colony, Guinea-Bissau gained international sovereignty in 1974 after a long war of independence. With an income per capita of US$ 180 in 1989, Guinea-Bissau is one of the least advanced countries in the world. The health sector is also underdeveloped: health coverage of the population is poor, and the indicators of health coditions are among the least favourable in Africa. 1.1 Sector by sector The main natural resources of the country are relatively fertile agricultwal land, sea fisheries and forests. The thee sectors that cover those resources-agriculture, fishing and forestry4ominate the economy, employing 90% of the working population, providing half of the gross domestic product and almost all the exports. In spite of the existence of these natural resources, which are relatively abundant and underexploited, the economic development of the country is faced with a number of constraints, the main ones being shortage of capital, lack of qualified professionals and workers, the climate, and the state of ruin in which the war of independence left the country.
