PREFACE Since the late 1940 's, the use of fluorides for the p~aevention of dental caries-especially the adjustment of tlze fluoride content of drinking waterhas been a subject of considerable controversy. Public health authorities that have contemplated adopting measures of this kind have encountered strong opposition and have offen had to undertake extensive reviews of the literature in order to reach a decision.
