ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project was planned and implemented by the World Health Organization with f i n a n c i a l assistance from the United Nations Fund for Population A c t i v i t i e s . The Review and Analysis of Information and Data on T r a d i t i o n a l B i r t h Attendants and the information used in the preparation of t h i s document was based on investigations and studies carried out by a number of people and on reports and information and personal assistance provided by many national and i n t e r n a t i o n a l collaborators. We g r a t e f u l l y acknowledge t h i s assistance. While it is not possible to give personal recognition t o these and other c o n t r i - butors, some individuals and groups merit special mention. The national and international s t a f f who p a r t i c i p a t e d in the Consultation on the Role of the Traditional Birth Attendant in Maternal and ChiLd Health and Family Planning, held in Geneva in March 1973, through t h e i r personal experiences, insight and ideas, made a valuable contribution to the further development of the project and the preparation of t h i s document. Thanks a r e also due to the national and international s t a f f who p a r t i c i p a t e d in the follow-up seminar and meetings held to review the guide and to elaborate the s t r a t e g i e s , task analyses and training programme. We are p a r t i c u l a r l y indebted to the consultants who a s s i s t e d us in preparing the document, namely Mrs Aurora Cudal, Health Educator, Rona Davies, Public Health Nursemidwife, and M r John Simons, S o c i o l o g i s t , ~ h o a l s os erved as consultant f o r t h e Consultation and the followup meeting.
