Excerpt: EPA relies on sound scientific research andinnovative new approaches to provide the under-standing and technologies needed to detect, abate,and avoid human health and environmental prob-lems, as well as promote improved environmentalperformance across all media—air, water, and land.In FY 2001 EPA conducted research to improveunderstanding of the principles underlying assess-ment and management of environmental risks and toallow the Agency to identify the most significantsources of risk to human health and the environ-ment. To ensure that EPA research is a source ofhigh-quality scientific and technical information, theAgency consults a number of expert sources, bothinternal and external, and uses several deliberativesteps in planning its research programs.
