High peaks of air pollution can have serious effects on mortality and morbidity from respiratory disease, whereas long-term exposure to low levels of air pollution has uncertain effects. The possible effects on health of long-term exposure to air pollution have nevertheless continued to attract the interest of those agencies concerned with the control of environmental pollutants. A considerable amount of research has been conducted over the past 20 years into the possible hazards to health from air pollution, particularly where exposure may have lasted for many years. Research has been directed mainly towards defining the relationship between exposure to air pollution and the development of respiratory disorders.
