1. INTRODUCTION The Centre for Environmental Health Activities (CEHA) of the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (WHOEMRO) planned and implemented the Regional Workshop on Water Conservation and Reuse: Important Elements of Water Resources Management Strategies. The workshop agenda and programme are presented in Annex 1 and 2. The workshop was attended by 16 participants from 15 countries. A list of participants is given in Annex 3. Technical support was provided by WHO staff from CEHA and three temporary advisers. The specific objectives of the workshop were to: 1. Review progress made in implementation of the recommendations of the last regional workshop on water conservation, March 1996. 2. Introduce the Water Utility Handbook on Planning Water Conservation Programme. 3. Review effective and practical strategies for water conservation which are adaptable and applicable to member countries situation. 4. Review successfUl experiences of member countries in water conservation and reuse. Dr M. Z. Ali Khan, Coordinator, Regional Centre for Environmental Health Activities (CEHA), read a message from Dr Hussein A. Gezairy, WHO Regional Director, to the workshop.
