PREFACE A large part of the work of WHO is directed to the building up of public health services and the control of epidemic diseases in tropical and subtropical countries. At the other extreme, the special public health problems of the polar areas are now demanding attention, as many countries are becoming increasingly interested in exploiting the resources of these regions. The Conference on Medicine and Public Health in the Arctic and Antarctic, held in Geneva from 28 August to 1 September 1962, was the first of its kind to be sponsored by WHO and was exploratory in nature. Attended by 32 participants representing five or six disciplines, the Conference covered a very broad field and provided an opportunity for the special medical needs of the polar regions to be considered from nearly all their many aspects. The general climatic and geophysical features of the Arctic and Antarctic were discussed, as well as the special characteristics gf the people living there and the diseases from which they suffer. Particular attention was paid to acclimatization to cold, to nutritional needs in cold climates, to problems of sanitation, and to the psychological effects of isolation, prolonged darkness, and the lack of customary amenities. The importance of the Conference lay not only in the novel nature of the subject to which it was devoted but also in the fact that it brought together so many different specialists and thus enabled the problem to be viewed as a whole. This has rarely been achieved in the past, but it is to be hoped that many future meetings will be organized along similar lines.
