EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In recent years, the number of developing countries that are actively engaged in the introdu~tion of quality assurance (QA) programmes into their health systems has steadily grown. ?'he increasing interest in and promise of QA has brought about the need for more communication and sharing of experiences. Over thc past couple of years, special meetings havc been held in conjunction with the annual congresses of ISQua. The purpose of these meetings has been to provide a fon~mfo r the specific concerns and interests of developing countries with regard to quality assurance. During thc most recent conference held by the International Society for Quality in Health Care in St Johns, Newfoundland, in May 1995, such a pre-conference mecting was held for the third time with participants from twenty countries. This most recent meeting was organized by the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization and was jointly sponsored with the Agency for International Development, the Quality Assurance Projcct,
