lnrroduccion The t e n t h s e s s i o n of t h e European Advisory Committee f o r Medical Research (EACMR) was held a t tile Regional O f f i c e in Copenhagen from 15 t o 17 February 1984. The meeting was opened by t h e I!ACMK Chairman, P r o f e s s o r T.M. F l i e d n e r . The D i r e c t o r of t h e W l l O Regional O f f i c e f o r Nilrope, Dr Leo A. Kaprio, welcomed t h e p a r t i c i p a n t s (a l i s t o f t h o s e a t t a n d i n g is anilexed). In h i s i n t r o d u c t o r y s t a t e m e n t , t h e Regional D i r e c t o r emphasized WHO'a h o l i s t i c view of l ! e a l t l l , ranging beyond t h e p u r e l y medical and s c i e n t i f i c m a t t e r s . The EACMK's o v c r a l l f u n c t i o n was t o review ongoing programmes i n WHO from t h e s c i e n t i f i c s t a n d p o i n t and t o a d v i s e the O f f i c e i n s c i e n t i f i c n l a t t e r s , but one of t h e more s p e c i f i c purposes of t h e p r e s e n t meering was f o r tho LACMR t o annlyse t h e document Targets i n aupport of t h e r e g i o n a l s t r a t e g y £or HFAZ000 (EllR/RC33/9 and C o r r . 1 ) . This had heen thoroughly d i s c u s s e d a t t h e t h i r t y t h i r d s e s s i o n of tile Regional Committee, and i n g e n e r a l Member S t a t e s had r e a c t e d v e r y p o s i t i v e l y t o it. T h e i r con~mcnts had been taken i n t o account i n f o r ~ l l u l a t i n g a r e v i s e d v e r s i o n , and t h c i r views on t h e r e v i s e d document were expected a t t h e end of February 1984.
