OPENING The meeting was opened by Dr Wilfried Kreisel, Executive Director, Health and Environment, who thanked the Bilthoven Division of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health for hosting the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dr Kreisel, and co-chaired by Dr G. Klein, Director, Environment and Health, EURO. Dr Y. von Schirnding, EHG, was the rapporteur for the meeting. The agenda for the meeting and a list of participants is given in Annex 1, whilst the background papers for the meeting are attached in Annex 2. Dr van Noort, Director-General, welcomed the participants to the meeting on behalf of the Dutch National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RTVM). He emphasised the critical need for exchange of ideas, and outlined the contributions that the Bilthoven Centre had made in enhancing scientific cooperation in particular areas of environmental health. It was hoped to broaden this collaboration beyond Europe eventually.
