Introduction: The continued increase in all measures of childbearing by unmarried women, especially since 1980, has resulted in considerable public concern and interest in assessing the factors associated with the trend, the consequences of nonmarital childbearing, and the characteristics of unmarried mothers. Birth rates for unmarried women of all ages—white, black, and Hispanic—are high and rising. Despite the increase in the demographic diversity of unmarried mothers, these women and their babies continue to be at disproportionate risk. They are still overwhelmingly young, poorly educated, low income, and likely to experience (along with their children) the longrange consequences, in terms of education and income, of their early childbearing as single parents. The trend in nonmarital childbearing and some of the factors associated with it are described and analyzed in this report.
