Excerpt
This booklet is intended to provide guidelines which can assist in reducing the uptake and prevalence of smoking among young people. Its purpose is to help the reader through the morass of data and research findings in this field, highlighting whatever has proved to be relevant or successful. It is hoped everyone will be able to select methods appropriate to their country and circumstances quickly and easily on the basis of other people's experience without needing to re-invent old ideas. Readers will probably know that smoking is the greatest known cause of disease and premature death in Europe. Efforts to eliminate this problem must start with preventing children from starting smoking. Where children have already started smoking or are experimenting, these efforts must also include encouraging and helping them to stop.
