By the terms of the census act, approved March 3, 1899, the Census Qffke was charged with the duty of enumerating the population of each of the states and organized territories, including the District of Columbia, and, in addition, the population of Alaska, Hawaii, and Indian Territory. For the purposes of this enumeration 300 supervisors’ districts were established, and in 297 of these districts, comprehending all the area to be canvassed, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, the conduct of the work was vested in ofhers termed by the census act supeimisors of census, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. In the remaining 3 districts, namely, 2 in Alaska and 1 in Hawaii, the enumeration was placed in charge of special agents, appointkd by the Director of the Census, under the disctietion given him by the census act. The area comprising the 29’7supervisors’ districts was in turn divided into 59,726 enumeration districts, and, similarly, that comprising the 3 districts in Alaska and Hawaii into 145 districts. The censuswas taken as of June 1, 1900, and was to be completed in two weeks in places of 8,000 inhabitants or more...
