INTRODUCTION The Seventh Asian Malaria Conference, convened by the World Health Organization in Manila, Philippines, was opened by His Excellency the Minister of Health of the Philippines, Dr Enrique M. Garcia, on 3 November 1980. The WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Dr H. Nakajima, welcomed the participants and transmitted an address from the Director-General of the World Health Organization. Messages were received from the WHO Regional Directors for the Eastern Mediterranean and South-East Asia. Dr Jacinto Dizon, Director, Bureau of Health Services, Government of the Philippines, was elected Chairman and Dr S. Pattanayak, Director, National Malaria Eradication Programme, India, Vice-Chairman. The Rapporteurs were Professor P. M. Moodie, Commonwealth Institute of Health, Australia, and Dr Adnan Budeir, Director of Communicable Diseases, Syrian Arab Republic.
