Excerpt
A significant proportion of infant deaths in developing countries result from exogenous cause3 and it is well known that the most susceptible babies are thoae with a low birth weight. In addition, low birth weight babies who do survive may suffer physlcal and mental growth impairment. Therefore, it is essential to identify low birth weight babies as early as possible so that appropriate measures can be taken to minimize the risk co the baby. At birth, it is therefore important to weigh the baby accurately. Unfortunately, chis is often not possible in the developing world eIcher because of a lack of scales or because the available scales are not sufficiently robuet to withstand constant use in the field.
