During the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (IDWSSD), 1981-1990, considerable progress was made in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of WHO to provide people with water supply and sanitation facilities. However, a large proportion.of the population in many countries, especially in rural areas, still do not have access to such facilities. Also, the Region being for the most part arid, does not have sufficient water sources. This scarcity makes water production very expensive. The shortage of water has a profound effect on the patterns and nature of socioeconomic development. Women's participation and involvement are essential to force a change and improve health and quality of life.
