INTRODUCTION Although some of the communicable diseaees have been brought under c o n t r o l , b a c t e r i a l i n f e c t i o n s remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality particularly i n the developing countries. In both developed and developing countries, moreover, the r l s k of some serious b a c t e r i a l infections has actually increased because of new methods of treatment which impair the p a t i e n t ' s defenses against infection. 1-13
