Excerpt
Excerpt: Smallholders? farms account for 95 percent of the total livestock population in Indonesia, while large-scale private enterprises account for the remaining five percent. Large-scale poultry farming, pig farming and, recently, beef cattle fattening on feedlots are most attractive to private sector firms. Accordingly, government policies towards increasing livestock production have focused on smallholders. The objectives of the livestock development policies have been to improve income, to develop exports and to reduce imports through substitution, to provide rural employment and to improve the nutritional status of the population.
