In 1985, there were 468 health centres of which 336 were rural and 132 urban. On average, urban health centres serve 38 000 persons and rural health centres 15 700. At the end of 1984 there was an average of 11/2 doctors per health centre and 4.2 nurses/midwives plus other staff. Urban centres may have up to five doctors and provide a 24-hour emergency service by shift working.
