Background Since 1957 the International Hospital Federation, the International Union of Architects and the World Health Organization have periodically held joint seminars on subjects of connnon interest. Health planners, hospital planners, administrators, and architects need to be familiar with the concept of dlsaster preparedness, especially when working in disasterprone regions. Consequently it was felt that the seminar planned for 1978 should be devoted Lo emergency care in natural disasters. The choice of this subject called for the collaboration of other international and non-governmental organizations wholly or significantly involved in disaster preparedness and disaster relief: the Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator (lJNDI(O), the League of Red Cross Societies and the International Civil Defense Organization. In view of the prominent pare to be played by UNDRO in the organization and conduct of the seminar, this became an UNDRO as well as an THF, IUA and WHO joint seminar.
