Excerpt
Effective action against TB/HIV coinfection is overdue. However, a number of important recent developments have created new opportunities for progress to be made, employing experience already gained and putting into practice new guidelines and recommendations. The Global Working Group on TB/HIV (the WG) was established under the auspices of the Global Stop TB Partnership and held its first meeting in April 2001. The meeting highlighted the severity of the dual TB/HIV epidemic and the need to step up action against it. The ProTEST approach to addressing TB/HIV was discussed, and initial experiences with pilot ProTEST projects were shared. This first meeting also reviewed and endorsed the WHO Strategic Framework to Decrease the Burden of TB/HIV.
