Excerpt: Originally established in 1903 as the Department of Commerce and Labor (32 Stat 825;), the Department of Commerce was redefined under the name it uses today on March 4, 1913 (15 USC 1501). The role of the new Department of Commerce was “to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce, the mining, manufacturing, and fishery industries of the United States.”
