1. INTRODUCTION Research towards the development of malaria vaccines employs a strategy v n g h e identification and production of parasite antigens which specifically elicit protective immune responses in the human host. Antigens from several lifc-cycle stages of plasmodia are potential vaccine candidates. In the case of target antigens of transmisaion-blocking immunity, che immune response will limit transmfssion of infection by suppressing the development of rexusl and spor~~~onsitca ges. The rationale for transmission-blocking vaccine development rests on the expectation that such vaccines will reduce malnria transmission levels, at least under certain epidemiological conditions, and, if used in combinati.on w i t h sporozoite or asexual blood-stage vaccines, will prevent, the propagation of any vaccine-resistant mutant parasites.
