INTRODUCTION This issue of Public Health i n &rope seeks to highlight some environmental health problems of current concern and to describe some of the a c t i - Ir5tie.s of the Regional Off ice in t h i s field. Industrialization proceeded much e a r l i e r in many parts of the European Region than in most other parts of the world. The d r i f t to the towns still continues and almost everywhere rural populations are decreasing and urban areas expanding. There is considerable disproportion in many count r i e s between the basic sanitation services available in towns compared with the countryside. Whereas most c i t i e s in the Region have adequate water supplies of good quaiity and a increasing 2 r o ~ o r t i o nh ave also saLisfactory disposal f a c i l i t i e s for Liquid and solid wastes, there are s t i l l many rural areas where such services are rudimentary.
