Half a million women die every year as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Many more suffer the debilitating consequences of ill-health resultiting from poorly managed pregnancies and deliveries. All but 5,000 of the maternal deaths which occur every year are in developing countries, with maternal morbidity being highest in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia (Figure 1). The Wodd Health Organization seeks to alleviate this burden of suffering through its Maternal Health and Safe otherh hood programme which represents WHO'S contrTbutionb the Safe Motherhood Initiative. This is a global collaborative effort to reduce levels of maternal mortality and illAealth significantly bythe year 2000. The common strategy of the initiative, shared by all partners, is directed at redressing the social inequalities confronting women; ensuringthat access to family planning infomation and services is available to 21 those who need them; developing community based maternity care; and providiig backup and support at the first level of referral for those women who require skilled obstetric care. Reducing maternal mortality and morbidity is not only essential for the health of women in their own right but will also reduce neonatal, mortality and improve the health of the newborn.
