The importance of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) as a major threat to public health at a global level has increased dramatically since the early 1980's. The new position of prominence of STD within the public health arena has been the consequence of a number of factors, including changes in the epidemiology of this group of diseases, increasing awareness of the serious medical sequelae and wideranging socio+conomic consequences of STD, and, most significantly, the advent of the AIDSIHIV pandemic.
