1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background and objectives The purpose of holding a Workshop on National Drug Policy and Strategy stems from recommendations mde by the joint MOH/DANIDA/UNICEF/WHO evaluation of the E s s e n t i a l Drug8 Programme in March 1985. Although there i s an E s s e n t i a l Drugs Programe which ensures constant a v a i l a b i l i t y of e s s e n t i a l drugs i n t h e r u r a l health f a c i l i t i e s , Tanzania has not yet established a c l e a r National Drug Policy linked with the country health programmes and resources. In order to r a t i o n a l i z e t h e supply and the use of drugs in the whole country, to make s a f e , e f f e c t i v e and inexpensive drugs a v a i l a b l e to the e n t i r e population and to save scarce foreign exchange, such a comprehensive National Drug Policy should be developed.
