1. INTRODUCTION The importance of community participation i n planning and implementing health programmes has long been recognized. A t the Alma-Ata Conference on Primary Health Care community p a r t i c i p a t i o n was defined as the process by which individuals and families assume responsib i l i t y for t h e i r own health and welfare and for those of the community, and develop the capacity to contribute to t h e i r and the cornunity ' s development (WHO/UNICEF , 1978) . They thus come to know t h e i r own s i t u a t i o n b e t t e r and are motivated to solve t h e i r common problems. It is an important strategy i n the primary h e a l t h c a r e approach.
