1. INTRODUCTION In an initial exchange of views between the various members of the Expert Committee, it was immediately apparent that there mas general agreement about the signs of increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus in most parts of the world. Thus, in contrast to the well-documented evidence of reduced incidence of diabetes mellitus in the adult when the food intake was restricted in many countries during the Second World War - a repetition of the phenomenon observed by Bouchardat in Paris nearly a hundred years ago - there are now indications of a rapid increase in the disease that are in complete accord with the recognized clinical association between diabetes and increased food consumption, reduced physical exertion and obesity. The increase continues despite the special foods now often available.
