Excerpt
INTRODUCTION This annotated bibliography contains the most relevant documents currently available concerning the work of the Division of Family Health. Taken in their totality, these documents reflect WHO'S concerns and some of its many initiatives in the area of Family Health, especially in the first few years of the 1990s. It is hoped that this Annotated Bibliography will serve to heighten awareness of the problems and challenges in this area, as well as to disseminate information on some of the solutions, new approaches and appropriate technologies. Over 50 percent of the documents in this Annotated Bibliography appear in the category of Safe Motherhood, and almost one-half of those relate directly to Maternal Health. This is in addition to the documents listed under the sub-categories of Maternal Mortality and Maternal Morbidity. The wealth of documents in these categories illustrates the effort that WHO in general, and the Division of Family Health in particular, is making to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. The documents in the category of Maternal Health discuss amumber of the complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, including pre-eclampsia, hypertensive disorders and postpartum haemorrhage. Three innovations--- the Home-Based Maternal Record (HBMR), simple delivery kits for the community level, and the partograph--are presented in documents in this category. An important Safe Motherhood document is the Mother-Baby Package, in final preparation, which describes the minimum set of interventions needed for rapid reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality in developing countries and gives step-by-step guidelines for implementing these interventions. The documents in the sub-category of Newborn Health describe some of the specific interventions, such as thermal control of the newborn.
