I. POSITION STATEMENT During the current reporting period (July 1983 to June 1988) two WHO Expert Committees produced reports on the major diseases of concern to the FilariasXs Scientific Working Group (SWG) (B-81; B-83). As a result, updated estimate8 of the prevalence of both onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis have become available. Onchocerciasis is now considered endemic in 34 countries: in Africa ( 2 6 ) , Latin America (6) and the Eastern Mediterranean ( Z ) , where there are populations of 78 million, 5 million and 2 million, respectively, at risk. Presently, 17.6 million people are infected and ahouc 336 000 are blind due to onchocerciasis. 1,ymphatlc filariasis, on the other hand, is endemic over an even wider geographic area, coverlng tropical and subtropical Africa, Central and South America, Asia and Oceania. In these zones there are, collectively, an estimated 905 million people at risk, and over 90 million are believed to be infected.
