Despite ample l i t e r a t u r e on p e r t u s s i s , l i t t l e i s r e a l l y know about the inicrobiology, epidemiology, prevention and treatment o f t h e d i s e a s e . Kecent research has r e s u l t e d in the i s o l a t i o n and c h a r a c t e r i z a t i o n of c e l l u l a r components from Bordetella p e r t u s s i s , but t h e i r r o l e , i n d i v i d u a l l y and c o l l e c t i v e l y , in pathogenesis or a$ p r o t e c t i v e a n t i g e n s , has not been e l u c i d a t e d . T h i s l a c k o f basic knowledge of the d i s e a s e , its d i a g n o s i s , the e t i o l o g i c agent and the s i g n i f i c a n t p r o t e c t i v e intnlunc response has complicate0 the development or an improved vaccine.
