Summary: Introductory remarks. Mr. Holmes reviewed senior staff changes at the Census Bureau and noted that Mr. Robert Shapiro has been sworn in as Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Department of Commerce. He announced that the Committee will take part in a meeting on race tabulations with the Census Bureau?s Race and Ethnic Populations Advisory Committees, and the Department of Commerce?s 2000 Census Advisory Committee on June 3, 1998. The next regular meeting of the Census Advisory Committee of the Professional Associations is scheduled for October 22-23, 1998. In reviewing current activities of the agency, Mr. Holmes pointed out that Census 2000 State Action Committee meetings will begin in the fall of this year. Two lawsuits have been filed challenging the use of statistical sampling in Census 2000, and several parties have filed motions to intervene on behalf of the Census Bureau. With regard to the budget, the President signed the fiscal year (FY) 1998 appropriation bill for the Bureau on Octob ...
