Excerpt
Introduction: Hurricane Floyd was the strongest and most damaging hurricane of the 1999 Atlantic season. At its peak strength it was classified as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale. By the time it made landfall near Wilmington, NC it had weakened to a Category 2 hurricane. Most of the damage and casualties attributed to the storm were due to the heavy rainfall and flooding caused by the passage of the storm along the U.S. Atlantic coastline. The hardest hit area was eastern North Carolina.
